Terrorism Conspiracy Theories and the 1978 Sydney Hilton bombing, Lockerbie, 9/11, and the London 7/7 bombings 6:00pm-7:30pm

An ANU Public Lecture Presented by Canberra Skeptics and the ANU Defence and Strategic Studies Centre

Speaker: Adjunct Professor Clive Williams

Finkel Theatre, John Curtin School of Medical Research
Building 131 - ANU
Garran Rd
Acton ACT 0200

Free Admission

Terrorism has been an increasingly visible part of life for the last 40 years, and following 9/11, one of the defining features of the early 21st century. There are, however, many who believe that terrorist acts are the result of insidious covert governmental organisations seeking to control the people they claim to be acting on behalf of.

Adjunct Professor Clive Williams from the Strategic and Defence Studies Centre at the ANU will examine the nature of conspiracy theories, particularly in relation to terrorist incidents - including 9/11. Discover the covert role played by aliens, neo-cons, shape shifters, Israeli agents, spin doctors or neo-Nazis in the significant events that have shaped our world.

Clive Williams has a career background as an officer in the Australian Intelligence Corps, which included a number of overseas intelligence appointments. After leaving the Army in 1981, he pursued a civilian career in Defence Intelligence, working mainly on transnational issues. He was a Chevening scholar at the War Studies Department, King's College, London, in 1987. He has worked and lectured internationally on terrorism-related issues since 1980, and started running terrorism courses at the ANU in 1996. He left Defence in 2002, and has since run terrorism and national security-related Masters course electives at the ANU and a number of Australian and overseas universities. He became an Adjunct Professor at the Centre for Policing, Intelligence and Counter-Terrorism (PICT) at Macquarie University in 2006. He also became a Visiting Professor at the School of Human and Social Sciences (HASS) of the University of NSW at the Australian Defence Force Academy (ADFA)
in 2006. He is a member of the International Association of Bomb Technicians and Investigators (IABTI), the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP), the Australian Institute of Professional Intelligence Officers (AIPIO), and an Associate of the International Academy of Investigative Psychology (AIAIP).

Traverse Poetry Slam 7.30pm-11.00pm

Traverse Poetry is back for another big year of poetry slams at The Front Gallery and Cafe (Wattle Street, Lyneham).

Each Traverse Poetry Slam starts with an open mic, which gives poets a chance to warm up their voices with their own work and covers. This is followed by the main event: the slam poetry competition. Each performer has three minutes to perform a poem on any topic, in any style, providing they don’t use props or musical accompaniment.

Three judges selected from the audience judge each poem on content, delivery and audience reception. The top three poets at the end of the night win cash prizes, books and literary magazines.

Oriana Chorale - Songs of Sundrie Natures 5pm

The Oriana Chorale, conducted by their new Music Director, David Mackay, will present a concert of sacred and secular a cappella works from Tudor and Jacobean England on Saturday and Sunday, the 27th and 28th of March at 5pm at St Paul’s Anglican Church in Manuka, ACT.

At the heart of this musical offering are the towering figures of Thomas Tallis and his student William Byrd who later became his collaborator. The programme explores the relationship between the two composers, which changed with the years and with the political and religious climate of the English court in the 16th century. The Oriana Chorale will trace their story in both song and the spoken word and display the heritage of music from Tudor England through the works of Byrd and Tallis, as well as Orlando Gibbons and Thomas Tomkins. They will explore how the Reformation led to a preference for English words over Latin, and the simpler melodies and harmonies of homophony over the complexities of polyphony.

Tickets are available from Canberra Ticketing (02 6275 2700) and at the door ($40 full, $30 concessions, $15 students).

Woden Wanderers Cricket Club 10th Anniversary Function 630pm - 7pm

The Woden Wanderers Cricket Club (WWCC) is 10 years old this season.

And we're inviting all past players, partners, sponsors and friends of the Wanderers to our upcoming dinner to celebrate this milestone.

We are fortunate to have secured the services of former Australian Test cricketer Dean Jones as our speaker for the evening.

Since we kicked it all off in 2000 a great number of players, sponsors and supporters have contributed to the growth and success of the Wanderers, making us now one of the largest Clubs in the Canberra City & Suburban Cricket Association, fielding 5 teams over the last two seasons.

The incredible support you have provided over the years has lead to our Club claiming our first premiership wins with 1st Grade winning back to back Premierships in 07/08 & 08/09, and narrowly missing in two 3rd Grade Grand Finals in 06/07 & 07/08.

Last year we made our debut appearance in the fourth grade Grand Final where rain washed out the first days’ play and sadly we lost in a tight tussle replay the next day,

To mark our achievements over the years a formal dinner is being held on Saturday 27 March, 2010 and the committee hope you and your guest/s are able to attend. Details are as follows:

Location: Hyatt Hotel, Canberra
Guest Speaker: Dean Jones
Time: 6:30 for 7:00pm
Dress: Lounge suit
Cost: $100/ticket includes canapés, two course meal and drinks from 7pm-Midnight

RSVP: by 27 February 2010
Email: 10yearswandering@wodenwandererscc.com by 27 February to RSVP
and to obtain payment details. Please advise any special dietary requirements.

The Hyatt Hotel in Canberra is offering our guests a special rate of $245 for a Park King room. To secure a room for this night you need to call Hyatt Reservations on 13 1234 and quote the group code G-WW10, or you can go to http://canberra.park.hyatt.com, go to the Rooms and Rates section and enter the group code G-WW10.

If you have any questions about the night please feel free to give me a call on 0419293592 or email president@wodenwandererscc.com.

Looking forward to catching up with you on what will be a cracking evening.
