Run with the Law 11.45AM
Support Special Olympics ACT in their participation in the LAW ENFORCEMENT TORCH RUN WITH THE LAW Wednesday 7 April 2010
2010 is the first time that the public have been invited to Run With The Law with 50 ACT Police Officers and ACT Special Olympic athletes in the Special Olympics Law Enforcement Torch Run.
Police officers and Special Olympic athletes are carrying the "Flame of Hope" to the Opening Ceremony of 2010 National Special Olympics Games to be held in Adelaide commencing on 19 April 2010
The Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics is the movement's largest grass-roots fundraiser and public awareness vehicle, raising US$34 million for Special Olympics Programs around the world in 2008. More than 85,000 law enforcement officers have carried the Flame of Hope across 35 nations, raising awareness and funds for Special Olympics.
The Canberra leg of this event is to be run through the Parliamentary triangle on Wednesday 7th April 2010 on its way to Adelaide. A large contingent of Canberra Special Olympic Athletes are participating in the National Games and in the Torch Run.
The Canberra Brumbies’ Matt Toomua and Mitch Chapman will be there to give their support to this event.
At 11:45 am, the Flame of Hope torch will arrive by Police launch at East Jetty on the South shore of Lake Burley Griffin where it will be met by an honour guard of ACT Police Officers. The 3.2 km run will depart from the International Flag display, around the Parliamentary triangle and on to Federation Mall (just North of Parliament House).
Runners can undertake the full 3.2 km, start from the halfway point or just the final 100 m dash from Old Parliament House to the finish. Following the run, the Flame of Hope will light the Special Olympics cauldron followed by drinks, fruit and a BBQ provided free of charge to runners, and at a moderate cost for others.
Registration for the Run With The Law and further information on the event is available from http://www.runwiththelaw.com.au/ on or the day. A donation of $25 is required to participate and runners will be provided with a T-Shirt to run in and a BBQ by the Lions Club at the finish.
Be part of this event and register a team to run, or be there to cheer on the runners and meet the Special Olympians who will be representing the ACT at the national games.
SO ACT is part of a global non profit organisation that encourages people with disabilities to be the best they can be through sport.
SO ACT provides an avenue for people with an intellectual disability to participate in a number of sport programs. Is B.S. Just The Opposite of Truth? 6-7.30pm
A review of Frankfurt's 'On B.S', with implications for informatics
Craig McDonald
On Tuesday, 13 April 2010
Time: 6:00 - 7:30 p.m.
Place: Lecture theatre, Innovations Building, Eggleston Rd, ANU
Free admission
No need to book but note that the theatre seats 106.
The author of the little book On B.S. is Harry Frankfurt, an Emeritus Professor of Philosophy at Princeton University. This book starts: "One of the most salient features of our culture is that there is so much b.s. Everyone knows this. Each of us contributes his share". He argues that "we lack a conscientiously developed appreciation of what it means to us. In other words, we have no theory". I want to argue that while Informatics theory, particularly Popper's* 3 worlds and the theory of reference (aka the correspondence theory of truth), does provide some conceptual context within which to place his analysis (and the entertaining works of Don Watson), it doesn't account for it and an extension to Popper's 3 worlds is needed.
* The Austro-British philosopher Karl Popper died in 1994. He had taught during the 1940s at Canterbury University College, Christchurch, New Zealand (as it then was), but was passed over for the chair of philosophy at Sydney University. From 1949 he was professor of logic and scientific method at the University of London. His Conjectures and Refutations: The Growth of Scientific Knowledge (1963) deals with 'falsificationism' as an account of scientific method. He discussed the idea of "3 worlds" in his Objective Knowledge: An Evolutionary Approach (1972; revised edition, 1979).
Craig McDonald is Associate Professor of Information Systems at the University of Canberra.

Jane Austen Festival Australia 7.30pm
"Festival breathes new life into Jane Austen in the National Capital"
The third annual Jane Austen Festival will be held at St John's Church, Constitution Ave, Reid, Canberra from Thursday 15 to Sunday 18 April 2010. Part of the A.C.T. Heritage Week Festival, it is the only festival in Australia to focus specifically on Jane Austen, Regency life or Napoleonic history.
'All ages are welcome - we have registrants aged 13 through to 80', said Festival Director Aylwen Garden-Gardiner. 'The programme is full of cultural activities of the time such as hand sewing, embroidery, bonnet and turban sewing workshops, craft, card games, singing, dancing, music and fencing. We'll even teach you how to talk like a person of the Regency period.'
'We'll bring Jane Austen into the 21st century with a panel discussion on the recently published ‘reinterpretations’, parodies, or sequels inspired by Jane Austen’s works, in particular The Independence of Miss Mary Bennet by Colleen McCullough, Pride and Prejudice and Zombies by Jane Austen and Seth Grahame-Smith, and Sense and Sensibility and Sea Monsters by Jane Austen and Ben H. Winters.
'And Saturday night's crowd will be abuzz with excitement as Austen aficionados play "dress ups" at the Grand Regency Ball. After the huge success of the 2009 ball, we are delighted to hold this special event to you again in 2010: the sight of over 100 people in Regency costume is quite a sight to behold', Mrs Gardiner-Garden said.
'And on Sunday evening we feature a special performance of Sense & Sensibility: a stage play.'
Mrs Gardiner-Garden is encouraging participants to get in fast to purchase tickets. 'Three quarters of all tickets have now been sold,' she said.
For more information, including full programme, ticket prices and accommodation information, go to www.janeaustenfestival.com.au or contact Aylwen Gardiner-Garden on 0409 817 623

Wolfgang Amadeus - The Genius of Mozart 8pm - 11pm
The ANU Choral Society (SCUNA) and the National Capital Orchestra (NCO) will collaborate in a performance of an all-Mozart concert at Llewellyn Hall on Friday 30 April at 8pm.
The concert is entitled “Wolfgang Amadeus – the Genius of Mozart”. It includes the popular Symphony 25; arias from several operas performed by well-known Canberra soloists; and culminates in the Requiem of 1791 with approximately 100 SCUNA voices. In keeping with SCUNA‟s status as the Australian National University’s premier choir, the soloists for the Requiem will be distinguished students from the ANU School of Music.
Program Details
The program consists of:
• Symphony No 25 in G minor: movements 1 & 4,
• Popular arias from The Magic Flute, Don Giovanni and The Abduction from the Seraglio,
• The Requiem Mass,
About the Requiem
The Requiem was Mozart’s last composition, and was incomplete when he died in December 1791. A romantic, if unsubstantiated, story persists to the effect that, as he was dying, Mozart became convinced that he was writing his own Requiem. In fact, a wealthy nobleman had commissioned the work for his deceased wife.
Fulfilling Mozart’s premonition, the incomplete Requiem was first sung in Mozart’s honour five days after his death. Mozart’s pupils, chief among them Franz Süssmayr, later completed the work. The version to be performed in the NCO-SCUNA concert is from a critically informed edition by musicologist, H.C. Robbins Landon. It incorporates some of the orchestration found in the manuscripts later „corrected‟ by Süssmayr.
About SCUNA
The ANU Choral Society (SCUNA) was founded as a university society in 1963. Since then, the choir has grown both in size and musical stature. SCUNA‟s membership draws from students, staff, alumni and friends of the ANU, and from the wider Canberra community. SCUNA is affiliated with the ANU Students‟ Association and is a member of the Australian Intervarsity Choral Societies‟ Association (AICSA).
About the National Capital Orchestra (NCO)
The National Capital Orchestra is Canberra’s premier non-professional orchestra whose extensive repertoire includes many major symphonic works. With a permanent membership of around 50 players from a variety of backgrounds, the NCO performs about 4 concerts each year. This all-Mozart concert will be the NCO‟s third collaboration with SCUNA, the previous two being Beethoven’s 9th Symphony in 2007 and the Brahms German Requiem in 2009.
About the Musical Directors/Conductor
The orchestra and choir have been rehearsed by Philip Hartstein, NCO Musical Director and Jonathan Powles, SCUNA Musical Director. The concert will be conducted by Philip Hartstein -- unfortunately, Jonathan is unavailable due to a sporting injury.
Philip Hartstein grew up in Canberra and holds ANU degrees in Law, Music and Medicine. After a career in international financial markets, he returned to Canberra in 1997 and has been Musical Director of the NCO since 2000. He has also conducted the Peg Mantle Strings, James McCusker Orchestra and Llewellyn Choir, as well as playing violin and viola in the Canberra Symphony Orchestra. His day job is as an intern at the Canberra hospital.
Jonathan Powles is a conductor, composer and musicologist. He completed a Bachelor of Music degree in composition from the University of Sydney in 1988 and then a doctorate in music at the University of Oxford, where he became Musical Director of Magdalen College. He continued an academic music career in the UK before he returned to Australia and from 2000 to 2003 was Head of the Musicology Department at the ANU School of Music. He was appointed as Musical Director of SCUNA in 2002.
About the Soloists
Rachael Duncan (Soprano) and Benjamin Connor (Baritone) will perform arias and duets from The Magic Flute, Don Giovanni and The Abduction from the Seraglio.
Rachael Duncan grew up in Canberra and studied voice at ANU and the Queensland Conservatorium. Her distinguished career as a soloist includes working with Opera Queensland and opera companies in Germany and the UK. A recipient of numerous prizes and awards, Rachael returned to Canberra in 2006 and now divides her time between performances and raising a young family.
Benjamin Connor graduated from the ANU School of Music in 2009. His recent performances include the title role in the School‟s 2009 production of the new opera by Joshua McHugh, Grimm and the Blue Crown Owl. In 2008, he won the Art Song Canberra Prize at the Australian National Eisteddfod, the Australia-Britain award for voice, and was best vocalist in the Margaret Smiles competition.
The Requiem solos will be sung by outstanding ANU School of Music vocal students, Pamela Andrews (Soprano), Ellen Malone (Alto), Robert Shearer (Tenor), and Daniel Brinsmead (Bass). Pamela and Ellen are studying with Louise Page, while Robert and Daniel are with Stephen Bennett.
Pamela Andrews has won numerous awards, including the City of Launceston Aria Award (2009), the DJ Mazda Operatic Aria Award (2007), and the Enid Spencer McDougall Encouragement Award (2007), and has performed as soloist with the Derwent Symphony Orchestra, the Hobart Orpheus Choir and the Tasmania University Musical Society.
Ellen Malone recently appeared as a soloist in Handel‟s Messiah with the Llewellyn Choir and also with St Mary‟s Singers. In 2009, she won the Llewellyn Award for most outstanding singer.
Daniel Brinsmead has been soloist in the Italian Opera Gala, Austrian Embassy Haydn Competition finals, Government House, the Polish embassy and Mozart‟s Missa Brevis at St Paul‟s Church, Manuka.
Robert Shearer holds a Kornfeld Sponsorship. His solo performances include Haydn‟s Mass in Time of War, Beethoven‟s Mass in C, Handel's Messiah, Jonathan in Handel's Saul and Pluto in Offenbach's Orpheus in the Underworld.
